KBS Nicolaasschool
The competition design for the extension of the KBS Nicolaasschool is based on four main themes: connection, identity, inspiration and responsibility. The design includes a new entrance and a small tower that establishes a strong connection with the surroundings. A new vibrant heart with informal space for encounters between kids, teachers and parents adds a multifunctional social dimension. The design creates frameworks that allow freedom and stimulate autonomy.
Due to the campus existing across different locations, the identity of the KBS Nicolaasschool is now fragmented across several sites. With the new building, which builds upon and adds a new layer to the existing ones, the school gains a strong core identity.
The three dimensional playground sparks the energy and the imagination of the children
Fabian van den Bosch | Principal architect
Three-dimensional playground
A challenging learning environment motivates one to discover and learn new things and so a strong balance between calmness and energy is important. Throughout the interiors, a neutral base with light and natural tones is complemented with accent colors. On the exteriors, a three-dimensional playground adds unique and valuable outdoor stimuli to the schoolyard. Combining different programmatic elements for both education and sports, it also provides a secondary routing that connects the ground floor to the highest level.
